Ward's Island Design Build 2024

Prototypes

Benches, Sawhorses and Side Tables

In the first week, the studio built prototype pieces. Working collaboratively in teams of four in the Daniels workshop, students constructed side tables, benches, and sawhorses.

The completed pieces were then placed outdoors, in front of the Daniels building. Using the stacked sawhorses with a sheet of ply as an ad hoc table top, and the benches and side tables as seating, the studio then sat to discuss tools, techniques, and construction methods learned.

Project One emphasized efficient material use, challenging students to maximize a standard 4' x 8' sheet with minimal waste.

Sawhorse construction included tracing templates, precise cutting, drilling and careful assembly.
